Biography
Community colleges provide an invaluable role to our community. I am a product of the
Community College system. I live in Huntington Beach and my four daughters attended
Golden West and Orange Coast Colleges. Like me, they, too, earned advanced
degrees. My wife and two daughters are O.C. educators.
I am a native California baby boomer raised in Los Angeles and I graduated from Long
Beach State. After college I began work as a probation officer and lived in Northwest
Orange County. During my career of thirty five years with the County of Los Angeles I
was an assistant administrator of two county general hospitals and multiple clinics. I
also taught Spanish in a classroom setting to Medical professionals. I was a budget
analyst for the Department of Health, and during the 80's and 90's I was a Senior
Deputy for County Supervisor Ed Edelman. My duties as the Supervisor's Deputy were
to assist in policy development, health issues and as budget analyst of a $12 billion
budget.
My family is education oriented. Along with my bachelor's degree from California State
Long Beach, I earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration from California State
University, Northridge. My wife also has a Master's Degree in Education, as does my
daughter Leah. My daughter, Lisa, received her Master's Degree in Psychological
Counseling. My daughters Laura and Tori are Sonoma State graduates. Laura recently
completed her MBA. Tori is a credentialed elementary school teacher.
I have found time to become involved in my community. I was a member of the Citizen
Participation Advisory Board for the City of Huntington Beach, and served two terms as
Chairman. This board provides recommendations to the City Council regarding the use
of Federal funds in the enhancement areas of the City. In Huntington Beach I also
volunteered at the Live Oak Adult Literacy Program teaching English and Citizenship. I
was also a member of the Coastline Community College Paralegal Advisory Board. I
am a licensed Amateur Radio operator, KD6FR, active on 220 and on 75 meters
phone. I believe one of the great untapped resources is the ham radio community, and
it is always ready for emergency response activities.
For the past four years I have had the privilege to serve you as a Trustee of the Coast
Community College District, Area One. I understand the needs of students that have to
compete in a world market. Thank you for your trust in me as your representative on
the Coast Community College District Governing Board.
